House Rule: Card Draw

Post by Logitude »

This is an optional house rule that can be toggled when creating a match.

The basis of this house rule is mentioned in the rule book as follows:

The base cards have 8 buildings and 4 of each other type of card, except natural wonders, which were only added in the Dynasties expansion. That's 36 cards, which is just enough to fill the progress board twice for 4-player. Since that doesn't work for 5-player or 6-player, I scaled the numbers based on the number of players as follows:

I took the liberty of emphasizing buildings and militaries since having none or few of those can be a sore spot. I also included fewer wars since only one of those can be bought per round and they can clog up the progress board.

The way this actually works under the hood on this site is to shuffle the progress cards and then separate them by type. Each time a card is drawn, it uses the numbers in the table as a weighted probability for choosing that type of card. After drawing a card of the chosen type, the weight for that type is decremented by one before drawing again. The weights are reset at the beginning of each age, and not at the beginning of each round. This method should be equivalent to forming a smaller deck and just drawing from that.

When Victoria Falls is discovered, all of the cards from the separated decks get shuffled together before drawing the 20 cards. Then the cards get separated again into their types.
