I have only begun playing and I see military as a must have - especially in the early eras.
I don't see any downside as it helps ensure you win wars, win battles, contest first pick, grab colonies and even win points for final scoring.
Are there other strategies? Or is it just pump military all day?

I have been bested by non-military quite a few times in tournaments. Especially by "david". Perhaps he can let us know how.
I tend to go for military though.
I think the general idea is to out-produce the military players. But you'll often need high stability to counter wars. And having no colonies and few if any battles can tank your advantage.

military and stability are relative compititon
u get turn order and aggressive war threat to other player
but remeber, military itsled does not produce anything, colony and battle are the compasion of it, but without u will evutally run out of resource to transform or imporve
you only need to be 【higher】to be the highest, by 1 or by 10 wont matter
battle can be claim by 【one】worker in military. so
so is about trade off and tempo, i think i played a game with u , sometimes i be underdog, but i save up resouce, pay my fee to buy war and avoid penalty. then wait for
for military underdog
- u got worker to produce resource, sometime a tide breaker can force hand
- buy war wehn they have military goes up, and u do not have enough stability
- maintain resource, steal battle from military resource
- wait for turns where they can no longer keep up, push for the cycle
